Laurence Chu, MD, FACS

External Thyroplasty

Thyroplasty is a procedure for mobilization and medialization of the paralyzed vocal cord. This procedure can help to improve the voice significantly.  This procedure can be performed in place of older procedures involving injection of teflon into the vocal fold area.

This procedure is not for all patients with vocal cord paralysis. An office evaulation and discussion are needed to determine the usefulness of this surgery.

This surgical  procedure places a specially designed implant to move the paralyzed vocal cord toward the midline, allowing the functional vocal cord to contact the paralyzed cord and generate a better voice.
